Robert von Weizsäcker new president

Dresden, 19/05/2007
Robert von Weizsäcker is the new president of the German Chess Federation. The oldest son of former federal president of the FRG, Richard von Weizsäcker, was elected new president at the DSB federal congress on May 19 in Bad Wiessee counting 211 of 229 votes in his favour.

During his incumbency the new DSB president aims to promote the social relevancy of chess in public. "Current studies prove that playing chess regularly improves not only the cognitive and motivational skills but also advances social competences" explains Robert von Weizsäcker. "In my eyes, chess is a playful answer to PISA."

To his election the professor for finance and industrial economics at the TU Munich was congratulated by Dr. Dirk Jordan, Chairman of the Dresden organizing committee Chess Olympiade 2008, and Jörn-Torsten Verleger, executive director of the "Chess Olympiad 2008 - Chess Foundation Lim." Both had before given an up-to-date report on the status quo of the preparations for the Chess Olympiad 2008.

Robert von Weizsäcker is correspondence chess grandmaster and used to play in the German chess league for Bonn. Currently, he is a member of the national team for correspondence chess and will fight for the title with his team at the chess olympiad.

The 52-year-old professor successes hitherto president Alfred Schlya from Oberhausen who abstained from running for office again after having been head of the DSB for six years.
