What has Chess got to do with Flowers?

Dresden, 08/10/2008

This question must have concerned the prospective floristry masters of the floristics training course FM 19 at the Dresden Institute for Floristics when they received their assignment task for this year’s master project.

Besides the written part of the exam the eight course participants from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia had to create a so-called space-oriented floristry as practical exercise on the occasion of the Chess Olympiad Dresden 2008. The fictitious task was described as follows:
„The organizer demands the grouping of the large event hall by 15 floral screens.“ Within 14 days the course participants had to prepare plan and front view drawings including a model piece, submit a list of plants to be used and had to realize this work within 3.5 hours.

On the weekend of September 20 and 21 their practical work pieces were presented at the Palais in the Großer Garten (engl.: Grand Garden) park Dresden. OC member Dr. Helga Schmidt and Managing Director of the Chess Olympiad, Jörn Verleger, did not miss the event, just like directorate member Dr. Dieter Ewers, and came to get a picture of the impressive works and chat with the artists regarding application possibilities during the Chess Olympiad. By the way, all eight participants successfully passed the course and the Chess Olympiad team therefore sends their regards.
