Guenter Wallraff in a new role

Dresden, 31/10/2008

The journalist and writer Guenter Wallraff is one of the Ambassdors of the Chess Olympiad Dresden 2008. In the course of his undercover research projects he discovered his fascination for the strategic game: “During the past years I have been challenged and chevied, mixed up with campaigns and at the same time in the dock. Chess, throughout all this time, has given me tranquillity and endurance; in a game I hop everything behind and leave into another world.  With chess, I have created a calming port in my life, a certain lifeguard. With it, I experience true moments of joy.”

The 66year-old also finds parallels to his work in the game: „My work constantly puts me into defence situations, with my actions I provoke countermoves which I must anticipate and preconsider – just like in a game of chess.“

Wallraff became famous through his thrilling reports on various big businesses for which he employed the methods of investigative journalism. Among others, he worked undercover as editor for the „Bild“ newspaper in Hannover for months. His experiences are portrayed in the bestseller „The lead – the man who was Hans Esser for ‚Bild’“.

For another spectacular project he had taken on the fake identity of a Turkish migrant worker for two years and was employed in several enterprises, for instance McDonald’s and Thyssen. His negative experiences, from harsh tone with guest workers and the companies’ tax saving tricks to the violation of rudimental labour protection laws, were written down in his book „Ganz unten” (engl. Way down).

His latest role as ambassador of the royal game the writer will, informally, tackle without disguise. He is looking forward to being a part of this mayor international chess event in Dresden and, maybe, to get the chance to play a game against one of the big grandmasters, off the beaten track. For instance against the former world-class player and co-ambassador of the Olympiad, Viktor Kortschnoi, who is still playing board one for the Swiss Open team and whom Wallraff announces to be his role model at chess.

The prominent Chess Olympiad ambassadors, besides Guenter Wallraff also soccer league coach Felix Magath, singer Sebastian Krumbiegel and regisseur Artur Brauner, support the royal game in public with their commitment.
