The last move in the GDR

Dresden, 17/04/2008
In 1995 Fritz Baumbach won the last medal for the GDR – 5 years after the political reunification of the two German states. It all was made possible by the extravagancy that his sport brings along.

Today’s president of the German Correspondence Chess Federation was member of the GDR selection for the 10th Correspondence Chess Olympiad in 1987. Due to the three-day consideration time1995 and the sometimes long-lasting mail shipping times in Eastern European states in the years following 1989 the award ceremony had to be largely delayed. Baumbach’s team thus literally made the last moves of the GDR.

Chess stories such as the one of Fritz Baumbach are now searched for by the Dresden town museum on the occasion of the Chess Olympiad Dresden 2008. The museum intends to portray and present recollections and memories of unique chess games – not only those of Olympiad participants – in its “Contemporary Depot”. “Our project is aimed in the first place at Dresden’s citizens. We hope for plenty of stories and item loans from the public” explains Dr. Werner Barlmeyer, museum director.

Especially requested are personal exhibits which may also seem unimpressive at first sight. What is important to the museum director is moreover that the pieces remind their owner of unforgotten chess moves against ingenious contestants, relentless chess computers or other memorable stories. They shall be presented to the worldwide public in an exhibition during the Chess Olympiad.

If you have potential chess stories hidden in your home closets which you wish to present you may contact the museum staff under the following number until 30. April 2008: +49 351 4 88 72 71.
