German Chess Federation

As head organisation of chess in Germany the German Chess Federation (DSB) is member of the German Sports Federation as well as, since 1926, of the World Chess Federation FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Echecs). With its approximately 97,000 members that are distributed to 2,700 clubs the German Chess Federation is one of the biggest in the world. Besides the state associations it also comprises the German Chess Federation for Blind People, the Association for Problem Chess "Schwalbe" as well as the German Federation for Correspondence Chess.

The DSB was founded on July 18, 1877 by athletes and intellectuals such as Carl Göring, Rudolf Gottschall, Hermann Zwanziger, Max Lange and Adolf Anderssen. The 50th chess jubilee of the latter also served as the cradle of birth for a supraregional, uniform chess organisation as representatives of all regional chess associations of the German empire got together. This was reckoned as an ideal occasion to talk about a possible unification.

A crucial intersection of the history of the DSB was without a doubt the period of National Socialism. The consoli-dation of power did not stop at the chess board, but went along with the change of name from the German Chess Federation into Greater German Chess Federation in 1933 under which he remained up until 1950. Only then it was that the DSB was reborn in Wiesbaden.

The decision of the GDR to found ist own national association, the German Chess Association (Deutscher Schachverband – DSV) in 1958 meant an anewed cut in the history of the DSB.  The reunification of GDR and FRG also entailed the coalescence of the two chess associatons, executed at the Leipzig Congress in 1990.

Ever since its formation the work of the DSB has culminated in the holding of the Chess Olympiad and we ware now looking forward to the fifth time – in Dresden.

Current DSB president is Prof. Dr. Rober von Weizsäcker  who has been holding his office since May 2007.
